Two and a Half Men is an American television sitcom that was first broadcast on CBS on September 22, 2003. Starring Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, and Angus T. Jones, the show was originally about a hedonistic jingle writer, Charlie Harper; his uptight brother, Alan; and Alan's growing son, Jake. Charlie's free-wheeling life is complicated when his brother gets divorced and moves, along with his son, into Charlie's beach-front Malibu house. The series' premise was revamped in the ninth season, focusing on Alan moving on with his life after the death of Charlie with help from his new best friend and housemate, Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher), who is also dealing with his own troubles following a bad divorce. Alan, Walden, and Jake eventually bond, becoming close friends, forming a surrogate family unit.
In 2010, CBS and Warner Bros. Television reached a multi-year broadcast agreement for the series, renewing it through at least the 2011–12 season.
However, on February 24, 2011, CBS and Warner Bros. decided to end production for the rest of the eighth season due to Sheen entering drug rehabilitation and making "disparaging comments" about the show's creator and executive producer, Chuck Lorre.
Sheen was dismissed from the show on March 7. The ninth season premiere, "Nice to Meet You, Walden Schmidt", killed off Sheen's character and introduced Ashton Kutcher as Walden Schmidt, his replacement.

The series revolved initially around the life of the Harper brothers: Charlie (Charlie Sheen) and Alan (Jon Cryer) and Alan's son, Jake (Angus T. Jones). Charlie is a bachelor who writes commercial jingles for a living while leading a hedonistic lifestyle. When Alan's wife Judith (Marin Hinkle) decides to divorce him, he moves into Charlie's Malibu beach house, with Jake periodically coming to stay. Charlie's housekeeper is Berta (Conchata Ferrell), a sharp-tongued woman who initially resists the change to the household but comes to grudgingly accept it.
The first five seasons find Charlie in casual sexual relationships with numerous women until the sixth season, when he becomes engaged to Chelsea (Jennifer Bini Taylor). However, the relationship does not last when Charlie flies to Paris in the eighth season finale in pursuit of Rose (Melanie Lynskey), who was introduced as his stalker in the pilot episode. In the ninth season premiere, it is revealed that Charlie died when he fell in front of a subway train in Paris; it is strongly hinted that Rose allegedly pushes Charlie in front of the train after learning that Charlie had cheated on her.
Alan's experiences are somewhat different from Charlie's. Throughout the series, Alan continues to deal with the results of his divorce from Judith, Jake growing up, and his generally little success with women. Even his marriage to Kandi (April Bowlby) at the end of the third season was short-lived. In the fourth season, Alan is back at the beach house paying alimony to two women out of his meager earnings as a chiropractor. In the seventh season, he begins a relationship with Lyndsey McElroy (Courtney Thorne-Smith), the mother of one of Jake's friends. Their relationship is temporarily suspended when Alan accidentally burns down her house and cheats on her, but the relationship eventually resumes.

In the ninth season premiere (after Charlie's death), the beach house is sold to Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher), an Internet billionaire in the process of being divorced from his wife Bridget (Judy Greer). Alan leaves to live with his conceited mother Evelyn (Holland Taylor) when the house is sold, but Walden whole-heartedly invites both Alan and Jake back to live in the beach house, needing friends to help him deal with his marriage breakdown, therefore forming a tight-knit surrogate family.
At the end of the ninth season, Jake joined the army and only appears occasionally during season ten. In the tenth season Walden proposed to his English girlfriend Zoey (Sophie Winkleman) only to be turned down after he found out there was another man, because of this he became depressed. Meanwhile, Alan gets engaged to his girlfriend Lyndsey, while Judith leaves her second husband Herb Melnick (Ryan Stiles) after being married since the fourth season, after he cheated on her with his receptionist.

Walden finds his Dad's old car for sale in Denver, which was also the first car Walden drove. He, Jenny and Barry fly to Denver to look at it. With many memories attached to the vehicle, Jenny convinces Walden to buy it, and they head back to L.A. by car. Stopping in a motel, they get stoned on the pot they bought in Colorado and bond over good and bad memories about their dads.

Playing along, Lyndsey says that she wants to sleep with "Jeff", leaving Larry to gladly hook up with Gwen. Lyndsey instead has sex with Jeff Probst rather than Jeff/Alan.

Meanwhile, Walden thinks that he is still a wanted man and ends up naked in the bushes outside his motel room while being pursued by the stoned manager.

In this episode, after watching Jenny pick up yet another woman at Pavlov's, Alan and Walden hit it off with the intellectual Jill and the ditzy Laurie. Lyndsey then unexpectedly shows up, putting Alan in an awkward situation when he doesn't know how to tell Lyndsey he has a date. Lyndsey is originally fine with it, but later drunkenly calls him on the phone just as Alan is about to have sex with Laurie. Walden tells Alan it's only fair, since Lyndsey is using him also. Lyndsey then shows up at the door and tries to seduce Alan, only for Laurie to emerge from Alan's room. The girls trade insults before Lyndsey throws up on Walden's rug. Alan goes to Lyndsey's house to apologize, but also to clarify that he is done being used by her while she is with Larry, and says goodbye to Lyndsey before Lyndsey decides that she is going to break up with Larry and stay with Alan. While in bed, however, they decide that Larry is missing from the relationship and opt to give it another shot.

In this episode, at a benefit hosted by Walden's mother, Robin, Alan sees his first celebrity crush, Lynda Carter, who mistakes Alan and Walden for a gay couple when Walden's mother tells her that they live together. Alan tries to convince Walden to set him up on a date with Lynda, but Walden refuses. However, after talking with Jenny, Walden changes his mind and invites his mother and Lynda over for dinner. Despite Walden's pleas for Alan to "be cool", Alan acts like a crazed fan, forcing Lynda to sign his Wonder Woman memorabilia. It turns out that Lynda really wants Walden, and starts to kiss him while they are on the deck. A furious Alan catches them, and ropes Walden with a replica of the Lasso of Truth. In the resulting tussle both Alan and Walden fall over the deck railing onto the beach. The next morning, Jenny sneaks both Robin and Lynda out of her room, while the oblivious Alan and Walden are on the deck apologizing to each other.

In this episode, Alan and Lyndsey are back to their sex-only relationship. After a session of what Lyndsey says was incredible lovemaking, Alan suggests they get back together. Lyndsey insists that she needs both Alan and Larry, because each man pleases her in different ways. Determined to find out what Larry provides that he can't, Alan joins Larry's spin class under the fake name "Jeff Strongman". He finds Larry to be incredibly friendly and supportive, and later accepts his invitation to watch the Los Angeles Lakers game from a luxury suite. But Lyndsey surprises Larry at the suite. She asks Larry to retrieve something from her car so she can confront Alan directly, but the two wind up having sex in the suite's restroom.
Meanwhile, Walden tries to get Jenny to return to her acting classes. Jenny tries a couple of classes, but then quits again, leaving Walden miffed about the prospect of having "two Alans" in his house.
